Country Specific Old Wives Tales Relating to Pregnancy
You don't have to travel the world to know about some folklores in other countries. Just reading a good book will let you have an idea. Take this Baby Lore: Superstitions and Old Wives Tales from the World Over Related to Pregnancy, Birth and Babycare by Rosalind Franklin which my sister-in-law is reading. It has some entertaining Old Wives tales about pregnancy. Some of the samples are:
Scotland: Children in Scotland piles cabbage stalks around doors and windows during Halloween so fairies can bring them a new sibling
UK:
It is believed that if a woman puts two spoons in her saucer, she will have ginger twins
To ease labor, women should throw salt three times behind herself before her due date.
Tickling a baby's feet will make him stutter
India:
When in labour and a woman is not progressing, she must drink water wherein her Mother-in-law's big toe has been dipped (EEWWW!)
Baby sitters are not allowed to clean their teeth while baby sitting
Guyana: Baby might become cross-eyed if Mommys wear high heels during pregnancy
Those are just some of the folklores that you'll read on the book. I'm a bit worried about the folklore from Guyana. My sister-in-law is a working mom and she wears high heels to work. Don't ask me why, she just has to be the fashion diva. She even orders her maternity clothes online at kikisfashion.com because she doesn't want to have the traditional materntity clothes. Anyways, it's not like she's the superstitious type and anyways, I must commend her for her style choice.
